James Maddison and Curtis Jones Left Out of England's Euro 2024 Squad

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison and Liverpool's Curtis Jones have been left out of England's 26-man squad for the European Championship in Germany this summer, the Football Association (FA) confirmed.

These are the first two of seven players manager Gareth Southgate will cut from his initial 33-man squad before UEFA's Friday submission deadline. Sources have informed ESPN that Jarell Quansah is also expected to miss out.

The FA announced on social media that 27 players would participate in Thursday's training session, with Lewis Dunk, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw absent as they follow individual programs.

Maddison, 27, came off the bench during Monday's 3-0 friendly win against Bosnia & Herzegovina at St. James' Park. He was part of England's squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but did not make an appearance.

He had to withdraw from the Euro 2024 qualifiers in November due to an ankle injury sustained during Spurs' 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea.

Before the injury, Maddison had three goals and five assists in 11 appearances for Tottenham since joining from Leicester City in June. However, he has struggled to regain his early-season form since returning from injury at the end of January, scoring just one Premier League goal against Aston Villa on March 10.

England will play Iceland at Wembley on Friday, with the final squad decision due by midnight CET.

England's tournament kicks off against Serbia on June 16, followed by matches against Slovenia and Denmark in the group stage.
